Job Summary

Job Summary

The Histotechnologist is responsible for performing and assisting with laboratory procedures related to histopathology, cytology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and hematology. The position ensures accurate specimen processing, slide preparation, staining, quality control, equipment maintenance, and proper documentation while following laboratory safety procedures and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Histopathology

  • Receive, identify, accession, and properly handle tissue specimens.
  • Perform tissue fixation, processing, dehydration, clearing, and paraffin embedding.
  • Cut tissue sections using a microtome and prepare high-quality slides.
  • Perform routine H&E staining and special stains as required.
  • Assist with frozen-section procedures when applicable.
  • Maintain proper specimen identification and traceability.
  • Assist pathologists by preparing slides and ensuring specimens are ready for microscopic examination.

2. Cytology

  • Receive and process cytology specimens, including Pap smears, body fluids, FNAC samples, and other cytological specimens.
  • Prepare direct smears, cytospin preparations, and cell blocks when required.
  • Perform appropriate cytological staining procedures.
  • Maintain specimen integrity and accurate identification.
  • Assist in screening and preparation of cytology slides according to laboratory policy and applicable regulations.

3. Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

  • Perform tissue preparation and immunohistochemical staining according to established protocols.
  • Prepare and run appropriate positive and negative controls.
  • Handle antibodies, reagents, and detection systems correctly.
  • Perform troubleshooting of staining problems and report abnormal results or technical issues to the supervisor/pathologist.
  • Maintain IHC reagent inventory and monitor expiration dates.
  • Ensure proper documentation and quality control of IHC procedures.

4. Hematology

  • Perform routine hematology investigations, including CBC, peripheral blood smear preparation and staining.
  • Prepare and examine peripheral blood smears as required.
  • Recognize abnormal cell morphology and refer suspicious findings to the responsible department head.
  • Operate and maintain hematology analyzers according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Perform internal quality control and troubleshoot instrument problems.

5. Quality Control & Laboratory Management

  • Follow laboratory SOPs, quality assurance, and quality control procedures.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assessment programs when applicable.
  • Maintain accurate records of specimens, tests, controls, reagents, and equipment.
  • Monitor reagent quality, storage conditions, and expiration dates.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
  • Identify and report non-conformities, specimen problems, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory results.

6. Safety & Infection Control

  • Follow laboratory biosafety and infection-control procedures.
  • Properly use PPE and handle biological specimens safely.
  • Dispose of sharps, chemicals, and biological waste according to laboratory policies.
  • Follow procedures for spills, exposure incidents, and other laboratory emergencies.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree  in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, or Histotechnology.
  • Relevant professional registration/licensure where required.
  • Practical experience in histopathology, cytology, IHC, and hematology is preferred.
  • Good knowledge of laboratory quality management and biosafety.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot relevant laboratory equipment.
  • Good documentation and organizational skills.
